The Women!

Sole Sisters, RVRR’s Women’s Racing Team

Winter Banquet

For all you Sole Sisters that missed the banquet this year, here is a brief overview of the recognition given to the women’s team. All women who were part of a team for at least one USATF Championship race during the 1997 year received a commemorative plaque. Now, this wasn’t just any plaque; it was hand crafted by my wonderful husband Russ Lazarek and personalized. The women that were not able to attend will receive their plaques at future events.

Also, some individual women received special recognition for their contribution to the team. Barbara Brent and Vivian Hoch were recognized as Most Valuable Runners for the masters and open women’s teams, respectively. Hopefully, this will be an annual award. Trink Poynter was recognized for the Pain In the Ass Award, and anyone who knows her will understand why. Jean Richards received the In A Pinch Award, and she certainly comes through in a pinch.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Sole Sisters for the wonderful gifts that I received at the banquet. I will wear my newly embroidered jacket with even more pride than I have in the past, and I proudly show off my new "Captain" key chain to everyone who is — or isn’t — interested. Thanks again; you are all great.

Welcome to RVRR

The Sole Sisters and Raritan Valley Road Runners would like to welcome new club members Debra Martucci and Karen Capuzzi. Debra is a masters runner who excels at all distances from 5K to marathon, and she is very excited to be running with us. In fact, Debra had her first taste of racing on the track at the 1998 USATF-NJ Masters & Submasters Indoor Championships on February 8th. She was first in her age group. Karen is running her first marathon this spring and could use our support, advice and best wishes. Even though she is too busy right now to join us on Wednesday nights, we hope to see her really soon. Welcome ladies; we hope to see a lot of you.

Team Philosophy

Sure everyone likes to win, but with our busy schedules we don’t always have time to run the races when they are scheduled. In 1997, the Sole Sisters were able to place second and third in masters and open divisions by simply showing up at every championship event. Let’s duplicate that for 1998. All women are welcome no matter what your running ability, and there is no minimum number of races required. The only pressure you will have placed on you is what you put on yourself. So get your racing shoes on and have fun!

1998 USATF Championship Races

The USATF Championship racing season kicks off with the Newark Distance Classic as usual. This year it will be on Sunday, March 8th at 9:30 a.m. We will have a carpool leaving from the "Y" in Highland Park at 7:30 a.m.

The Red Dog Half Marathon takes place on Sunday, March 22nd. Last year, RVRR had the only women’s masters team. We may not be that lucky this year, but let’s give it our best effort and show up with a team.
